Prevalence of Registered Cases for Chronic Kidney Disease in 2019 and March 2022 in Panama

Abstract:
Background: Chronic kidney disease is a progressive and irreversible loss of kidney function. Panama, according to CSS statistics, there are more than 2,200 patients for the year 2020 in dialysis treatment (Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis) and monthly between 35 to 40 new patients who enter to receive care. Objective: To know the prevalence of registered cases of chronic kidney disease in 2019 and March 2022 in Panama. Methodology: It is a descriptive, cross-sectional investigation. Once the research protocol was designed, presented and approved before the bioethics committee of the University of Panama, this research was carried out with information provided by the Ministry of Health and the Social Security Fund of Panama. Results: For 2019, at the national level the highest prevalence was registered in the male sex. The age group 80 years and over. The rural area and the health region of Coclé followed by Chiriquí and Panamá Norte. By March 2022, the highest prevalence was male in provinces such as Panama, Chiriquí, Coclé and Panama Oeste. The age group was from 51 to 70 years. Conclusion: Both in 2019 and in March 2022, the prevalence of CKD cases, according to the sex variable, was predominantly male. With age, as age increases, the number of cases increases. The provinces were Coclé, Chiriquí, Panamá Norte and Panama Oeste appears.
