Abstract:
Purpose: To determine which household products would be most effective in killing or slowing the growth of mold while also comparing pH levels
Hypothesis: I believe the more acidic products will do better against molds
Procedures: KIRBY BAUER 1) Selected 8 household remedies to use in process. 2) added ten milliliters (or ten grams) of product to 100 mL of distilled water. 2) Applied Penicillium notatum and Aspergillus niger to nutrient agar plates. 4) Applied products to mold infested plates and organize them in sections. 5) Place nutrient agar plates in incubator at 37 degrees Celsius. 6) Left plates in for 24 hours before removing from incubator. 7) Measured inhibition zone in millimeters of each product. 8) Repeated process for ten consecutive weeks.
Results: Hydrogen Peroxide and Vinegar proved most effective against mold. pH level seems to have no effect on the growth of molds
COLONIZATION 1) Used same products as Kirby Bauer process. 3) Chose a bathroom tile as my experimenting table. 4) Section tile in sections for each product. 5) Applied product to cotton swab and swab tile. 6) Applied cotton swab to nutrient agar plate. 7) Placed nutrient agar plate in incubator at 37 degrees Celsius and leave for 24 hours. 8) Removed plate and count colonies
Results: Hydrogen Peroxide and Ammonia proved most effective against household molds. Again, acidity not playing much of a factor in the growth of molds.
Conclusion: pH level of household remedies isn’t important in the growth of molds
