Abstract:
To bridge the gap between the increasing demand in the STEM workforce and the mathematician shortage, we constructed a children's book that combined the definition and applications of a complex mathematical concept, the union-closed sets conjecture, with approachable storytelling to nurture interest into the mathematics field. Previous studies corroborate that children understand math topics easier through literary contexts. Through our formulating of a book and focus group testing, we found that a book blending the union-closed sets conjecture into a fantastical setting did result in a learning process of the conjecture and, most importantly, an interest to learn.
